Mars Voyager

Agency: Method
Role: Product Designer
Date: 2020

As part of the expansion of their veterinary services business, Mars Petcare partnered with Method to design, build and launch the next generation of their veterinary hospital software platform (named Voyager), to support their future growth ambitions.

The existing practice management system had a limited non-networked, on-site solution with all compute and data infrastructure managed locally in each hospital.

The project mission was to unite the Mars Petcare portfolio under a single cloud-based system and utilize the centralized data to improve care.

A fast-paced timeline

Empathy and Rationalization
By shadowing staff and doctors at clinics and hospitals of varying sizes, the team was able to gain firsthand an understanding of the work flows, conventions, and demands of veterinary practice.

Mapping Veterinary Service Flows

Service blueprints were created to highlight inefficiencies in the current state, and also opportunities in the new Voyager state.

Foundational UX

The information architecture, key user flows, and interaction model for the software were created in collaboration with veterinary experts.

From there, wireframes were designed and tested with those same experts in support of validating the new foundational UX for Voyager.

A Flexible, Lightweight, and Scalable Platform

With other 150 project members across multiple time zones, a design system was created for the design and build of Voyager.

The rationale behind the system was communicated through onboarding docs, style guides, and the library files themselves.

The new solution saves time and removes duplication of tasks, and frees up professionals to spend more time with patients.
